Obtaining your securities license. We pay you while you study.
State and federal law require that all Investment Representatives pass the General Securities Registered Representative Examination (Series 7) and a state licensing examination (Series 63) in order to sell securities. Our Study for Success program prepares you for this exam!

Study for Success is a 10-week, home-study course. You will study full time and be compensated on a bi-weekly basis. We provide you with comprehensive study materials, practice tests, a laptop computer and printer, videotapes and a series of mailings to help you along the way. These materials cover everything you need to know in order to pass the Series 7 and 63 exams. In addition, an Edward Jones Academic Training Leader will work closely with you and monitor your progress throughout your home-study program. A training team is always on hand to answer your questions.

Exceptional hands-on training
Once you pass your Series 7 and 63 exams, it's time to relocate if necessary and begin learning and understanding investments, customer needs and sales skills. Our nine-week training program will do just that. It consists of six main components which are listed below:

Components of Training
  • Mentoring (ongoing)
  • Know Your Customer (one week)
  • Market Research (three weeks)
  • Branch Training (three weeks)
  • Prospecting Week (one week)
  • Evaluation/Graduation (one week)
Mentoring
Before you even begin your training, you are assigned a mentor who will be with you every step of the way. You will also meet with your regional leader - the person responsible for the geographic region of Investment Representatives - to determine where you will most likely start your business. Additionally, you will be assigned to a Success Team consisting of 10 to 12 trainees, one academic leader and one veteran Investment Representative. This proactive mentoring program has had proven results, providing tremendous continuity and immediate support. Your mentor and Success Team will help you learn and practice the ``Five Critical Activities for New Investment Representatives,'' which were developed after extensive study of successful Edward Jones Investment Representatives.

The Five Critical Activities for a New Investment Representative are:
  • Make 25 real contacts per day (125 per week)
  • Ask open-ended questions to obtain financial information
  • Present an appropriate investment and ASK for the order
  • Assess each contact, add prospect to funnel, indicate next action
  • Contact prospect at least every two weeks
Always do what is right for the customer.

Know Your Customer
Conducted at one of the firm's headquarter facilities, this class will help you develop a better understanding of the industry, the firm, customers and their needs and key investments. There is intensive focus on prospecting techniques and an introduction to the Edward Jones computer-based information system.

Market Research
This is your time to get to know the location in which you'll be building an Edward Jones business. You will begin making a contact list and developing a business plan to take you through the first months of building a business.

Branch Training
During this phase of your training, you work in the office of your field trainer, a veteran Investment Representative who volunteers his or her time for this role. You will observe your field trainer and the branch office assistant as they run their business, nurture prospects and service clients. With the guidance of a field trainer, you will make prospecting calls to at least 10 first contacts each day, honing your prospecting and basic sales presentation skills. You will also sit in on client appointments during this time.

Prospecting Week
This week is spent in the market you have selected to build your Edward Jones business. During this time, you will complete a minimum of 125 repeat face-to-face contacts, ask potential clients open-ended questions to obtain financial information, assess each contact and indicate the next action.

Evaluation/Graduation
During this class, held in our headquarters facility, you will become officially licensed and begin making telephone contacts with the key prospects you've identified. This is your chance to sharpen your presentation skills. This is also the time to officially begin building your business by calling prospects with appropriate investment ideas and scheduling appointments.

Training Segment
After completing this 17-week training segment and meeting basic qualifications, you qualify to begin the process of finding and building out your own, fully-equipped Edward Jones office, paid for by the firm. Most Investment Representatives will actually move into a fully equipped office 7-8 months after Evaluation/Graduation is completed.

One of the industry's best ongoing training programs
During your first few months as an Edward Jones Investment Representative, you will work closely with our New Investment Representative Development Department to reinforce your knowledge of investments through monthly conference calls, broadcasts and in-depth training modules. Your mentor also remains in close contact, helping you through trouble spots and providing extra assistance as needed. In addition, as your business grows, you will be invited to attend additional training classes.

Taking your business and your clients to the next level of success
Our advanced training program is recognized as one of the best in the industry. It is designed to help you take your business to a higher level by enhancing the knowledge and skills you need to better serve your clients and run your branch office more efficiently.
